Bay Area Flight Training: How to Become a Pilot
Here’s the Private Pilot path at a high level. Every student is different, so we’ll tailor the plan to your schedule, experience, and goals — and I teach it the way I learned in Navy aviation: brief, fly, debrief.
Discovery Flight
A fun first lesson: you'll fly the airplane, see the local area from the air, and we'll talk through your goals and timeline.
Medical + Prep
Get your FAA medical (a 3rd Class is typical for Private). I'll set you up with study materials, ground school resources, and a lesson plan.
Flight + Ground Training
Dual instruction on the fundamentals: aircraft control, navigation, communications, weather, regulations, and decision making — briefed and debriefed every lesson.
Solo + Cross-Country
Once you're proficient and meet the requirements, you'll solo — then fly cross-countries to build experience and confidence.
Knowledge Test
I'll prepare you for the FAA written exam with targeted study and practice tests, integrated alongside your flight training.
Checkride
The final practical test with an FAA examiner: an oral portion, then the flight. We'll train for proficiency and calm, methodical execution.
Timeline, budget, and aircraft
Most students finish in about 50–70flight hours — how fast depends on how often you fly. My instruction is $40/hr for Private training and $25/hr for dedicated ground; aircraft rental is billed separately by XL Aviation at KLVK. See the pricing page for an honest estimate of the total cost to your certificate.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where is Schleeble Aviation based?
I'm based at Livermore Municipal Airport (KLVK) and serve the San Francisco Bay Area and East Bay. Most training is flown in aircraft rented through my partner operator, XL Aviation, at KLVK.
What certificates and ratings do you train for?
I provide one-on-one instruction toward the Private Pilot certificate, most Commercial Pilot training, flight reviews, endorsements, and ground instruction on any subject (including instrument ground). Instrument flight instruction and IPCs will be available October 2026 — my CFII is in the final stage.
Can I train at a different Bay Area airport?
Yes. If you have access to an aircraft or prefer another field, we can discuss training at nearby airports such as KCCR, KSQL, KRHV, KPAO, and KHWD, depending on availability and logistics.
How do I get started?
The easiest first step is to book a free intro call — we'll talk about your goals, timeline, and budget. From there, most students fly a discovery flight, obtain an FAA medical (a 3rd Class is typical for Private), and we build a lesson plan around your schedule.
How much does flight training cost?
My instruction is $40/hour for Private Pilot training and $25/hour for dedicated ground instruction. Aircraft rental is billed separately by XL Aviation at KLVK (a Cessna 172 runs about $170/hour wet). The pricing page has an honest estimate of the total cost to your Private certificate.
How long does it take to become a pilot?
Most students earn the Private Pilot certificate in about 50–70 flight hours; calendar time depends on how often you fly. Flying two to three times a week is the best way to keep both the timeline and the total cost down, and we'll build a realistic plan around your schedule.
